The Fit for Life, Fit for Work program will be adapted to fit a rural setting, Nwamitwa near Tzaneen. It is envisaged that the ‘Fit for Life’ part of the program would provide a critical strategy to empowering young rural women in particular to enable them make healthy life choices. As such, the current life skills curriculum used by Etafeni Trust will form the basis for this component. Young women and men with Grade 12 would, after the Fit for Life training, be directed towards English, computer skills, driving lessons, catering, training for the hospitality industry, etc – skills to help them find work in the commercial sector.
Those with Grade 10 and girls that have dropped out of school as a result of teenage pregnancy would be directed towards work skills training or to return to complete high school if they have not done so. The key focus for this subgroup will also be to prepare them to start small businesses of their own, enter into the informal work sector, or return to school to complete matric. Work skills for Grade 10s therefore, would initially consist of block and brick making, bricklaying, plastering, painting, carpentry, plumbing, food gardening, community caring skills (counseling, home care, etc), educare, administrative skills and craft or other income-generating skills (sewing, beading, embroidery, etc).

Diversity
Brief |
| |
The members of the Trustees of the Valoyi Traditional Authority Trust are
Tsonga-speaking Black South Africans, and five of the 14 member are women,
including the Chair and Deputy Chair of the Board of Trustees. All that
staff members will be drawn from the local community, and where appropriate will
include young people. The proposed community outreach manager is a young
woman.
There are no appointed staff members on the Board as yet. In terms of
diversity regarding the implementation of the proposed project, the main challenges
include those of gender and age. The serious problem of teenage pregnancy
and mothers necessitates ensuring that they are given attention, and provided
with options to support themselves and children, as well as continue with their
education. There is also the need to promote a strong community response to
discourage teenage pregnancy, a problem which the communities tend to
condone.
There is also the need to pay particular attention to young people who are
HIV positive and address the stigma they may face. These Nwamitwa communities
also experience a problem with orphans and disabled people who often face
additional challenges.
The project will seek to accommodate their needs. Education on
sexuality in traditional and conservative environment may face initial
resistance because from religious leaders as well as a clash with perceived
cultural values. The intention to involve community, including religious
leaders and traditional leaders will help to address this potential
challenge.
